Tips for Your First Travel Assignment

1. Make the most of your free time. Part of the thrill of travel nursing is seeing the country, and meeting a variety of different people. Getting there a few days early helps. Scout out grocery stores, and especially work location. So you are comfortable driving to and from work.
2. Be prepared. Make sure to have important documents with you. Birth certificate, ID, social security card, immunizations, and other certifications. Also take your own towels, linens, shower curtain, plates, glasses, and utensils.
3. Ask questions. After the paperwork gets done, you spend usually two shifts on the floor with a shadow nurse. Colleagues don't mind answering questions about the job. The more you ask, the more you are informed about the facility!
4. Be informed about your benefits, especially your health coverage. What hospitals you can access, locations, quick or urgent cares that your health plan covers.
5. Remember that attitude can make all the difference. A new job isn't going to be perfect. Keep an open mind and positive attitude.
